Sharks fade as Connacht take control to book Challenge Cup quarter-final

Despite missing a number of their front-line stars, the Sharks made a strong start and were first on the board through flyhalf Jean Smith, who slotted an early penalty to hand them a 3-0 lead. Smith added a second three-pointer midway through the half and continued to punish Connacht's indiscipline, stretching the advantage to 6-0.

Despite spending long periods under pressure, Connacht struck back through wing Chay Mullins, who finished well out wide after being released into space. Fullback Sam Gilbert added the conversion to edge the hosts into a brief 7-6 lead before Smith's accuracy off the tee ensured the Sharks took a 12-7 advantage into the break via two more penalty kicks.

Connacht came out firing in the second half and quickly turned the contest around. Centre Cathal Forde capped off a well-worked attacking move to level the scores before Gilbert's conversion nudged the hosts ahead at 14-12.

The momentum firmly shifted in Connacht's favour as they began to dominate territory and possession. Flanker Shamus Hurley-Langton powered over from close range to extend the lead, and although the conversion was missed, the Sharks were now firmly on the back foot.

Forde added his second try of the night just after the hour mark, slicing through the defence to put daylight between the sides. Gilbert converted and later added a penalty to push the score out to 29-12, effectively sealing the result.

Connacht comfortably saw out the closing stages, holding the visitors scoreless in the second half to secure a convincing victory and book their place in the quarter-finals.
