Jordan Hendrikse returns as Sharks ring changes for Lyon Challenge Cup opener

The Sharks will give several young players the chance to impress when they open their 2026/27 EPCR Challenge Cup campaign against Lyon in France on Saturday, with Springbok flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse among the key returnees.

Coach JP Pietersen has made 12 changes to his starting XV following last week's United Rugby Championship defeat to the Stormers, opting for a largely reshuffled side for the European assignment.

No 8 Nick Hatton will captain the team, while former Sharks lock Stephan Lewies returns to the starting line-up after coming off the bench against the Stormers. Lewies recently returned from seven years in England with Harlequins, where he spent four seasons as club captain.

Hendrikse's return is a significant boost after an injury-enforced absence. The 25-year-old started two Tests for the Springboks against Wales in 2024 but has not featured in Rassie Erasmus' plans since. His comeback also comes at a useful time following Vusi Moyo's shoulder injury against the Stormers.

The flyhalf will partner veteran scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl, with Gianni Lombard providing cover from the bench.

Junior Springbok winger Jaco Williams also returns to the starting XV after injury disrupted his progress. The 20-year-old made an immediate impression after joining the Sharks earlier this year and scored on his Springbok debut against Wales in July.

Another player looking to make an impact is Suleiman Hartzenberg, who is on loan from the Stormers. Usually deployed on the wing in Cape Town, the powerful 23-year-old will start at outside centre alongside Murray Koster.

The starting front row comprises Hanro Jacobs, hooker Ethan Bester and Phatu Ganyane, with Deon Slabbert joining Lewies in the second row. Manu Tshituka and Matt Romao complete the loose trio alongside captain Hatton.

Zekhethelo Siyaya and Lili Bester will provide width in the back three, with Siyaya among the players retained from the Stormers match.

The Sharks also have several experienced options available off the bench, including Emile van Heerden, Tino Mavesere, Bradley Davids and Jurenzo Julius.
