Griquas defence keep Lions at bay to secure Currie Cup victory

Griquas held off a Lions surge in the second half to secure a 25-21 victory in their Currie Cup clash played in Kimberley on Friday.

The hosts scored three tries in the opening period to take a 19-7 lead into the halftime break but the Lions came roaring back after the interval.

Griquas were 14-0 ahead after 15 minutes after centre Jay-Cee Nel and captain Hanru Sirgel went over for five-pointers while flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela added both conversions.

The Lions hit back after they were awarded a penalty try but the home team extended their advantage when scrumhalf Johan Mulder scored just after the half hour mark.

The visitors came back into the contest after the interval with Johannes Pretorius and hooker Morne Brandon going over for tries.

The Lions were leading 21-19 with 20 minutes remaining but ill-discipline cost them as Dobela slotted two penalties to win the game for Griquas.

The Lions threw everything into attack in the dying stages to snatch the win but the home team's gritty defence held out.
