Esterhuizen honoured as Sharks celebrate standout players at annual awards

The Springbok centre was recognised after a season in which his leadership and consistency stood out despite a difficult campaign for the Durban franchise.

Unlike awards decided by media or supporters, a Players' Player of the Year award reflects the respect and appreciation of teammates who understand the demands of the season, the effort put in behind the scenes, and the influence a player has within the squad on and off the field.

Esterhuizen received the award after getting the nod from his teammates, while lock Emile van Heerden claimed the Hollywoodbets Sharks Player of the Year prize for his performances across the URC and Investec Champions Cup.

The Sharks used the evening to recognise players who impressed during the 2025/26 season, with players, staff, sponsors and guests gathering to celebrate standout individual contributions and emerging young talent.

Loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi was one of the biggest winners on the night, collecting three awards after an impressive campaign. He was named URC Player of the Season, Top Try Scorer and Fans' Player of the Year.

Fullback Aphelele Fassi was recognised for his impact in Europe after being named Champions Cup Player of the Season following a series of influential performances in the competition.

The awards also reflected the Sharks' focus on youth development, with Phatu Ganyane receiving the Breakthrough Player of the Year award after emerging as one of the club's rising talents.
