Teenage sensation Rafael Jodar through to maiden Masters 1000 semifinal in Canada

The 19-year-old Spaniard battled as his 4-1 lead was reduced to 5-4 in the opening set before rain interrupted play for about an hour. Jodar had more adversity when he lost an early break lead in the second set. But he kept his cool on both occasions to claim a one-hour, 42-minute win.

"I knew that I was doing things right," said Jodar.

"I think he played a good game when he broke my serve in the fourth game of the second set. I was just trying to [play] my game and see what happened. That worked perfectly today, and I stayed very calm during those important pressure moments of the match.

"It wasn't going to be easy, and I knew that even going a set and a break up. The match was not finished, because Arthur always gives his best until the finish."

Jodar will face Brandon Nakashima in the final four. The 28th-seeded American advanced to his maiden semifinal at Masters 1000 level by easing past 19th seed Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3.

"Super happy with making my first semifinal," said Nakashima.

"It was a goal of mine at the beginning of the year to try to do well at one of these Masters 1000s tournaments. So to be able to do it for the first time here is really special."

Elsewhere, fifth seed Ben Shelton powered past Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1 in 73 minutes, while Learner Tien closed Tuesday's play in Montreal with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Daniel Merida.

"It felt great," Shelton said.

"To be honest, I was really happy with my return game, the way that I played from the ground from point one for me is where I want to be at. I think that the level that I maintained throughout the match was really high and if I was nitpicking at all, it was just the way I served at the end."
