Simone Kruger sets her sights on reclaiming her discus world record

Kruger threw 38.82m at the 2024 Para World Championships in Japan to become the world record holder. 

However, she has since lost the record to Colombia’s Xiomara Saldarriaga, who threw 39.54m at the Meeting of L’Hospitalet in Barcelona on 18 May. 

The 2024 Paralympic bronze medallist has taken the record from Kruger, but the South African champion is determined to get back to the top with an even bigger throw.

"But also, if people don't know, I currently don't have the world record anymore. So one of the other athletes broke it and so it's not mine anymore. So it's probably one of the dreams also is going to be kind of taking it back, I feel like. But that's a goal that we're currently working for. But then I actually have to get into the 39s, which is kind of exciting for me. So yeah," said Kruger

The South African Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability has set her sights on throwing beyond 40 metres. 

Kruger has reached the distance before, but the throw was disallowed. 

She is now hoping to go beyond 40 metres with a legal throw and reclaim her world record. 

It has been a relatively quiet year for Kruger, but she will get another chance to challenge for the world record and defend her world title at the global championships in Uzbekistan from 19 to 27 June.

The 21-year-old talented thrower is also trying to manage her expectations and take things one day at a time. 

But winning another Paralympic medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Games remains one of her biggest goals.
