SAFA confirms 28 August date for approved candidates and pledges transparency

Mogajane was speaking to the media at the handover of the SAFA elections nominations documents at SAFA House in Johannesburg today. 

These elections will see delegates from the 52 regions, 11 associate members and the special member, the PSL, vote for the new SAFA leadership on the 12th of next month. Mogajane has more to say on the processes that will follow...

"Our rules are there to advise SAFA in terms of the statutes, constitution and regulations. The deadline for the congress is on the 12th of September and we have almost four weeks to work on these files."

SAFA President Danny Jordaan (going for fourth term) and AmaZulu owner Sandile Zungu are believed to have been widely nominated across the regions from all the provinces.  

SAFA has kept the same governance committee members, who oversaw the last elections in 2022. SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao reiterated that the governance committee is an independent body and will ensure that all the nominees are eligible for the elections.

SAFA didn’t disclose the names of the candidates who have been nominated, saying that the process will be undertaken by the governance committee once they have finished the eligibility checks. 

The rest of the committee members are Vice-Chairperson Tumi Dlamini, Abel Ramolotja, Shakespeare Hadebe and Anzel Laubscher. The Governance Committee will be tasked with dealing with any issues around the candidates, and checking whether they meet the criteria for nomination in terms of the SAFA statutes, as Ramolotja explains...

"The governance committee's powers and function are clearly outlined and Provision section 25 tells you tells us if a candidate is eligible or not, and if the person meets all requirements their nomination will be proper."

The election season comes with a lot of interest and scrutiny from the general public, and Dlamini, who has also served at the CAF governance committee level, says they are approaching this process with absolute accountability and transparency.
