Janene Carey celebrates 113 Spar Women’s 10km races

Veteran South African long-distance runner Janene Carey has celebrated a remarkable milestone of 113 Spar Women’s 10km Challenge races.

The 54-year-old reached the milestone in Gqeberha, surpassing former champion Sonja Laxton’s record of 112 races.

Carey first competed in the series 32 years ago, when the race was still known by a different name.

After more than three decades and races across different cities, she says she is still enjoying every moment and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

"I was at the first Spar Women's race, and I was there even before that when the race fell under a different name. There is nothing like the Spar Grand Prix, it is the only event of its kind and keeps us motivated and inspired even at the ripe old age of 54, although I don't feel that old."

The Boxer Running Club veteran, who finished third in the 50-59 age category in Gqeberha in 41:37, has enjoyed many memorable moments during her incredible journey. She reflected on some of her favourite races and highlights from more than three decades in the series.

"Coming from KZN, the coastal races are always my favourite. Cape Town is probably my favourite place to run, and one of my most exciting races was in PE around three years ago where a pipped a competitor right at the finish line so that was special."

Carey has watched the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge grow in numbers and quality over the years.

She has also witnessed the rise of a new generation of stars, including three-time series winner Glenrose Xaba and rising star Taylor Kavanagh.

Carey believes Xaba is making a big impact on South African road running.

The Durban-born runner also shared some valuable advice with the next generation of athletes.

With the Spar series offering only five races each year, reaching 113 appearances is a remarkable achievement.

Carey says runners should enjoy the journey, live a healthy lifestyle and, most importantly, take care of their bodies.
