SABC Sport has confirmed that Tete, a former WBO and IBF junior bantamweight world champion, was shot and killed by four men as he was returning from the gym earlier this evening.
Tete (38), who had just returned from a four-year ban was preparing to return to elite fighting possibly in November, and was one of the shining lights for boxing in the Eastern Cape province and South Africa for some time.
The pro boxer achieved an impressive status in the sport after holding both the IBF Junior-bantamweight and WBO-bantamweight world titles at different stages of his career. Tete also broke the world record for the fastest KO finish in just eleven seconds back in 2017.
Police will release further details regarding the shooting, as the investigation progresses.
This is a developing story.
