Neheng Khatala targets sub-2:25 marathon time under new coach

Lesotho long-distance star Neheng Khatala is targeting a fast marathon time of under 2:25 next season as she begins a new chapter under coach James Makhethi.

The Olympian says she is settling in well with her new mentor and believes their partnership can help her improve her personal best.

Khatala has already enjoyed success under Makhethi, including winning the Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km race at Nasrec last week.

She says they have built a good understanding and that she is learning a lot from him.

"You know it's a new chapter for me, and a new chapter comes with learning everything – challenging yourself – so it was a bit tough joining a new coach. The training program is very different, but it's one of the toughest training sessions I have done. For me, it feels like I am getting stronger and I am looking forward to next year," said Khatala.

"I am also looking to run a fast marathon next year. The aim is to run 2:25:00; if I can run a sub 2:25:00, it will be amazing. We are learning from each other, adapting to training, and trusting the process."

The North-West University student says she parted ways with her former coach, Andrew Booyens, on good terms.

The two remain in contact, and Khatala says she still has great respect for him and values what he taught her during their time together.

Khatala has also thanked her husband for his continued support throughout her running career.

Despite his busy schedule as a medical practitioner, he makes time to attend her races and cheer her on.

She says his encouragement means a lot to her and gives her extra motivation to keep pushing.

Khatala could make it three wins in a row over 10km when she lines up at the Absa Run Your City Mangaung 10km on Sunday.

However, the Lesotho star is not getting ahead of herself, admitting that she is unsure whether she can extend her winning run.

She says the support from the crowds will give her extra motivation to go for another victory.
