Karabo More opens up about tears before Spar 10km race in Gqeberha

South African long-distance runner Karabo More produced a superb performance at the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge in Gqeberha on Saturday, finishing second in a personal best of 32:21.

But before the race, More was overcome by emotion and could not hold back her tears at the start.

The Boxer Running Club athlete says she is dealing with a personal challenge away from running and revealed that it is related to her mental health.

More did not want to go into detail about what she is going through, but showed great courage to put it aside and deliver one of her best performances of the season.

"I'd say, yes, it was a plan to see how far I can go. At the end of the day, I have to risk it and see where it's going to take you or put you at the end. So today it worked in my favour because each and every kilometre was all about getting faster than the one I did," said More

"So I think we learn from them. At the end of the day, we have to feel what they feel in front so that we can also come and help them so that we can also reach their potential, with us being the challenge from start to finish. I think that my mental health, it has nothing to do with my athletic career. I'm here to learn and I'd like to keep it that way and just focus on my career and what I'm here to do. Thank you."

The 24-year-old says the final three kilometres were the key moment of her race. After her coach encouraged her to chase down Gebre, More dug deep to finish strongly and secure second place, while also earning valuable points.

More is enjoying one of the best seasons of her career.  After winning the African 1500m title in Ghana earlier this year, she says belief in herself has helped her achieve more than she expected.

More also made her Commonwealth Games debut in the mile earlier this year.

She says her goal in Gqeberha was always to run a personal best, and the wet conditions did not stop her from achieving it.
