Before the much-anticipated fight in Las Vegas, Topuria took the decision to relinquish his featherweight title and made the move up to chase lightweight gold.
Former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, also vacated his title to move up a weight class to fight Jack Della Maddalena. This created the space for a blockbuster title fight between the Matador, Topuria, and the ever-dangerous Oliveira.
Just like many people were expecting, the title fight didn't last very long. Ilia Topuria flatlined Charles Oliveira with a devastating right hand, two and a half minutes into the very first round.
This is what the undefeated Spaniard had to say after the fight.
"I already said that I was going to knock this guy out in the first round. I represent the new generation of Mixed Martial Arts. This is the next level of the game."
Topuria's stunning triumph against a UFC legend is something that the MMA community is growing accustomed to seeing.
Topuria has knocked out three former champions, Alex Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira, in consecutive fashion. He also becomes only the tenth two-division UFC Champion in history, joining a list of names that include Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, and Conor McGregor.
Topuria will, in all likelihood, make his first Lightweight title defence against rising English star, Paddy 'The Baddy' Pimblett.
For now, the new undefeated and undisputed lightweight champion can celebrate his KO victory in style, before entering the Octagon again at the end of the year.
