Coco Gauff withdraws from Wuhan Open after difficult China swing

Coco Gauff has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open after an early exit from the China Open and a difficult spell during the Asian swing.

The American was beaten by Elise Mertens in straight sets in the last 16 in Beijing, having complained of health issues during the match.

Gauff also faced online abuse following a controversial moment during her previous match against Chinese teenager Sun Xinran, with some accusing her of poor sportsmanship.

She will now miss the final WTA 1000 event of the season, despite being the defending champion.

In a statement released by the tournament, Gauff said: "I'm disappointed to withdraw from Wuhan, especially as the defending champion. I always love playing there.

"After a long year, my body needs some time to rest and recover. I look forward to returning next year."

Gauff's withdrawal means she will lose the 1,000 ranking points she earned by winning the tournament last year, although she has already secured qualification for the WTA Finals.

The decision will give the 22-year-old more time to rest and prepare for the season-ending tournament, which will be held at Indian Wells from 8 to 15 November.

Gauff has won one WTA title this season, claiming the Cincinnati Open in August, and will be hoping to finish the year strongly on home soil.

She is one of six players already qualified for the WTA Finals, alongside Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva.

Three places remain available, with Elina Svitolina, Iga Swiatek, Marta Kostyuk, Iva Jovic and Mertens among those still in contention.
