Jadeja has featured in the role in ODIs and T20Is in the past, but never in Test whites. In his debut season as captain, Gill led his men to a hard-fought draw in the five-match tour of England in August.
A notable absentee from the Test squad is Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from a toe fracture sustained during the England series. In his place are specialist wicketkeepers Dhruv Jurel and N Jagadeesan. Jurel is expected to be the first choice behind the stumps.
The mercurial Jasprit Bumrah is also in the squad. There were questions raised about his fitness after sitting out two of the five Tests in England, but chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar confirmed he should run out for both Tests in October.
"This team has been picked for both the Tests, so he's available for both Tests," Agarkar said at a press conference at the ongoing Asia Cup in Dubai.
"We've had a fair break after England. He didn't play the fifth Test [at The Oval] either. So there's been a five-week break. Even this tournament has been fairly spaced out till the last week. So no, he's ready and keen to play both Test matches."
Bumrah will be supported by quicks Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, while Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are the spin options.
The first test gets underway on 2 October at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
