Hasan Mahmud rips through Australia as Bangladesh take control in Darwin

The day completely belonged to Bangladesh, who took advantage of a pitch sporting tinges of green to power through the Australian middle order, then show patience with the bat in the afternoon.

Choosing to bat first, The hosts made a solid enough start. Travis Head (22) and Jake Weatherald (23) put on 45 in 11 over before chief destroyer Hasan Mahmud ended Weatherald's scratchy innings by finding his outside edge.

Head chopped one on, then Australia lost their third when Marnus Labuschagne edged Ebadot Hossain to second slip with zero footwork. And when Cameron Green (13) fended Taskin Ahmed straight to midwicket, the Baggy Greens had gone from 45/0 to 74/4.

After lunch, Steve Smith and Alex Carey began a repair job. They were patient and watchful, putting on 55 runs together as they reached drinks. But Hossain struck with the first ball after the break, with Carey unfortunately chopping onto his stumps, and again a lack of footwork was to blame.

With their tails up, Bangladesh continued to throw the ball to their pacemen, who ended up taking all ten wickets. Ahmeed absolutely castled Beau Webster for 12, then Mahmud charged in to get rid of the tail - and a resolute Smith for 71 - in quick time with some beautiful seam bowling. Mahmud led the team off the park with stunning figures of 6/55 as Australia managed just 198.

Bangladesh then proved with the bat that the pitch was not full of demons. Openers Shadman Islam and Tanzid Hasan, playing in just his second Test, combined for 36 runs before Australia talisman Mitchell Starc struck. The ball angled into Islam's pads and he could only manage to get a leading edge that was gobbled up by Nathan Lyon at cover point.

But that - along with Smith's 45th Test half-century earlier - was all Australia had to celebrate. New man Monimul Haque was incredibly watchful and played some delightful shots, including a ramp shot off Pat Cummins and a skip down the track to dispatch veteran spinner Lyon.

Hasan and Haque would finish unbeaten on 32 and 35 respectively as Bangladesh left the park in charge at 96/1.
