England's Jos Buttler to miss ODI tri-series in Pakistan due to hamstring injury

Buttler sustained the injury while batting in the second game of the home series against Sri Lanka, with Jordan Cox taking gloves and a spot in the middle-order for the series finale that England won at the Oval on Sunday.

Cox struck 76 from 52 balls coming in at number 5 as England romped to a 223-run victory to seal a 2-1 series win, and head coach Brendon McCullum said Cox would now be given an extended run in Buttler's absence.

McCullum and his staff are keen to build England's depth ahead of the 50-over World Cup that will take place next year.

"I thought it was quite a Jos Buttler innings," McCullum said. "He will get the opportunity in Pakistan, which is exciting for him. Whilst it's disappointing not to have Jos, it's going to be good for us to see where we're at, because between now and 14 months' time, lots of things are going to go wrong.

"There's going to be lots of selections that you think would happen, and teams that you think will be the best teams to play against opposition, but someone will get injured or there'll be a scheduling situation.

"You have to almost catastrophise these things a little bit in order to prepare yourself as best as possible for that World Cup in 14 months' time."

The ODI tri-series in Pakistan will start on 18 October with the hosts taking on Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi, while England's opening contest will be played two days later.
