Bad light stops play with England in tatters after Pakistan's Abbas and Ali star

Mohammad Abbas led a disciplined seam attack that reduced England to 248 for 9 before bad light brought play to a close with 29 overs still scheduled.

Early rain and a wet outfield delayed the start. When play began, Abbas immediately found movement and a nagging length. He removed Emilio Gay with a sharp catch behind by Mohammad Rizwan, then trapped Ben Duckett lbw after a successful review - a delivery that also marked Abbas's 900th first-class wicket. Joe Root, the England captain, was pinned in front soon afterwards and did not review. England were 36 for 3.

Harry Brook fell to a beauty from Mohammad Ali that jagged back down the slope and took middle and off. Dan Lawrence was later run out and Jordan Cox, who had rebuilt with a patient 55, was caught by substitute Salman Agha off Khurram Shahzad.

Jamie Smith then played the day's most fluent innings, reaching 61 with ten fours before Ali bowled him. Ali also accounted for Ollie Robinson first ball of a new spell, and Abbas returned to bowl Jofra Archer. Gus Atkinson finished unbeaten on a rapid 34.

Abbas finished with 4 for 56 from 15 overs and Ali took 3 for 67. Their control and movement defined the day. For England, Cox and Smith provided the main resistance after the top order collapsed; Atkinson's late hitting added some impetus before the light closed in.

Pakistan will resume with one wicket to take and the chance to keep England's first-innings total in check.

England, 1-0 up in the series after Headingley, still have the lower order and will look to the new ball on day two. The contest remains evenly poised after a day that belonged to Pakistan's seamers.
